St. Thomas Aquinas emerged winners of the first edition of the Greater Accra No Yawa Inter-Schools debate which took place at the assembly hall of the Odogorno Senior High School, Accra.

Aquinas won from a list of 8 schools selected by the organizers.

Topics for the debate centered around teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, abstinence, and also on the role of stakeholders in educating the youth on sexual reproductive health issues.

Other competing schools were Odorgonno Senior High School, St Margaret Mary SHS, Ngleshie Amanfro SHS, Salem SHS, Preset Pacesetters SHS, Osbert SHS and Labone SHS.

The debating schools took turns to battle for the crown, the ultimate reward being a ticket to represent the Greater Accra Region at the national Level in the Ashanti Region.

In an interview with Livefmghana.com, a representative of the wining school described the experience as “an eye-opening one,” which has exposed them to the dos and don’ts of sexual reproductive health.

“The debate was not easy, it looked like all schools came prepared and were rooting to be the ultimate winner but we believe our hard work paid off. The topic has deepened not only our understanding of issues related to the roles parent play but has taught as to be confident and work harding in achieving our goals in future,” a member of the winning debating school said.

All participating schools went home with certificates, and stationery.

Mrs Rosie Gbegnedji, Field Operations Manager for DKT International Ghana, organizers of the event, expressed her profound gratitude to the schools.
