Stiff Opposition for Gays, Lesbians in Ta'di

The people of Western Regional capital, Takoradi are gearing themselves up to embark on a massive demonstration against gays and lesbianism practice that is gaining root in the country.

The demonstration which is spearheaded by a group calling itself Life and Freedom Movement is organizing students from almost all the second circle institutions in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis, taxi drivers, market women and petty traders to embark on the demonstration by the end of the week.

According to the president of the Movement, Mr. Prince Armah, what motivated the group to demonstrate is simply because, "as and coming leaders of the nation, the responsibility lies on them to protect and maintain the dignity of Ghana thereby the need to fight this menace that is threatening the very foundation of this country is very necessary".

Mr. Armah continued, even though religious bodies and the student union have issued statements condemning such acts, it will be appropriate to demonstrate to tell the world that Ghana is not ready to entertain such practices on its soil.

He said: "We intend to use all legitimate means to make Ghana a hostile place for these gays and lesbians". He lauded moves by the religious bodies, government and the other bodies for coming out in time to condemn the acts.

The demonstration is expected to begin at the British America Tobacco Roundabout at 9 in the morning through some principal streets of Takoradi and end at the Gyendu Park around 12 O'clock pm where a petition will be sent to the Regional Minister.

Mr. Armah told ADM, the demonstration will have a national character since some of its leading members are from the various political groups in the country. He said the Movement has the intention of repeating the demonstration in Accra and Kumasi later in the year.

"I wonder", Mr. Armah said "why the so-called president of the gays and lesbians association is still walking around a free person and have not been arrested by the police. But I promise that we are going to make sure this demonstration destabilizes their activities in this country".

He called on all well meaning to come out in their numbers to demonstrate thereby erase the image these inhuman practices has brought to this nation and also tell the whole world Ghana is clean and peaceful country to live in.
