Students awarded at Independence Anniversary in Winneba

Winneba (C/R) March 6 GNA - Twenty-five students from the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District were awarded for their good performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and sporting activities at the 48th Independence Anniversary celebration at Winneba on Sunday.

Ten of the students who are in various second cycle schools in the country scored aggregates six in the 2004 BECE while fourteen others excelled in national and local sporting activities. They received a cash awards ranging between 50,000 cedis and 150,000 cedis.

Master Gideon Yawson of the University Practicing JSS, Winneba won the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports Award of a pair of training boots for coming first in the under '15' National Marathon Game last year in Accra.

About four hundred children from more than 20, first and second cycle schools and voluntary organisations, including members of the Dressmakers and Beautician Association took part in the parade to mark the occasion.

University Practicing JSS at the South Campus was adjudged the best with 336 points in the march past of school children. Uncle Ridge JSS placed second with 335 point while University Practicing JSS at the North Campus took the third position with 331 points.

They were awarded with prizes.

The District Chief Executive for the area, Captain Steve Kwamena Armah, Mr Ekow Ayamful, an Assistant Director of the Ghana Education Service and Mr Nicholas Gasu, Winneba District Police Commander jointly took the salute.

The DCE had earlier read President John Agyekum Kufuor's Address. A large number of people including, the Omanhen of the Effutu Traditional Area, Neenyi Ghartey VII attended the parade.
