Students from Belgium Palace Academy tour Regional Fire Office

Accra, June 11, GNA - Members of the Fire Club of the Belgium Palace Academy, a private school at Nii Boye Town, in Accra, on Friday paid a familiarization tour to the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to acquaint themselves with operations and activities of the Service.

Prince Charles Angu Siaw, Proprietor of the Academy, said the tour was also in connection with the school's proposal to the Government to include fire preventive education on the Ghana Education Service curriculum in basic schools.

He said: " A household of 10 HIV/AIDS patients cannot destroy that house but a small fire can destroy lots of properties including precious lives, when not controlled on time."

Prince Siaw appealed to all stakeholders to add their voices to the proposal so that school children would learn early about the importance of fire prevention and control.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Samuel A. Yankey, the Regional Fire Officer, commended the proprietor and the students for their efforts to send fire prevention to every corner of the country.

He said due to ignorance, fires that could be controlled or prevented were left out to destroy lives, properties and the vegetation. "We, in the Service are always ready to share ideas and experiences with such clubs to ensure that both the people and our national properties are protected against fire."

Mr Yankey urged the children to explain whatever they learnt from their club meetings to those in their houses and in the community. Assistant Divisional Officer, James Kwateng and Mr Michael Gabienu, Regional Operations Officer took the children round the various Departments, where they were taught how to put out fire.

The Academy was established in 1994 to assist the less privileged and orphans in the Nii Boye Town and surrounding areas.
