Students of UEW offer voluntary teaching in basic schools

Nkawkaw, Aug 7, GNA- Eleven members of the Okwahu Students Union including two women from the University of Education, Winneba, have completed one month voluntary teaching in some rural basic schools in the Kwahu South District during their semester vacation.

The programme, sponsored by Mr Seth Adjei-Baah, Managing Director of Shaaba Enterprise, took the students to rural communities such as Kofi Dede, Wisiwisi, Ampekrom, Kwahu Nsaba and Asubone Rails where they taught at the Primary and Junior Secondary Schools.

Addressing the students at a send-off party organised for them, Mr Adjei-Baah thanked them for accepting his invitation when he visited the University in February for them to assist their younger brothers and sisters.

He said the teaching programme had exposed a lot of inefficiency at the basic schools such as poor infrastructure, lack of teachers, furniture, teaching and learning materials.

Mr Adjei-Baah appealed to Kwahu citizens at home and abroad to contribute to the education of children in the area. He said he will sponsor the programme annually to upgrade the standard of education in the district and appealed to more students of the union from other tertiary institutions to join the programme. The Co-ordinator of the programme, Mr Eugene Osei Aboagye, commended Mr Adjei-Baah for paying the travelling and feeding allowances of the students.

In appreciation of the good work, Mr Adjei-Baah distributed rice cookers and two blenders to all the students.
