Students of Wa School for the Deaf receive support

Ten students of the Wa School for the Deaf, can now stay in school and learn in comfort, following support they received from the Lambussie-Karni District Assembly.

The items presented to them included students’ mattresses, towels, buckets, uniforms, sandals, blankets, soap and toilet rolls.

In all, the Assembly spent 3,400 Ghana cedis to purchase the items, and also paid off their school fees.

Mr Bom Kofi Dy-yaka, Lambussie-Karni District Chief Executive (DCE), who presented the items to the students through Mr. Samuel Babinah, Headmaster of the School, disclosed that the support package was coming from the Disability Fund.

He said government’s vision was to create opportunities for all to have access to education, adding that, such a vision, include giving support to the physically challenged, and brilliant but needy students, to enable them pursue education to the highest level.

The DCE said it was for that reason that he took it upon himself to go round all schools to identify such category of people, who were from the district to enable them benefit from the fund.

Mr Babinah thanked the Assembly for the gesture, saying, it would help make the students’ stay in the school a comfortable one.

He said the attitude of some parents towards the physically challenged was not the best, stressing that they sometimes discriminated against them, in terms of the fair distribution of resources among their children.

The Headmaster advised parents to treat all their children equally, and give them the best they can, saying, “Physically challenged children have something to contribute if they are well catered for.”

He disclosed that the school population currently stood at 306 across all 11 districts in the region, and appealed to other District Assemblies to emulate the Lambussie-Karni District Assembly, by coming to support students coming from their districts.
