Accra, Nov. 9, GNA - A comprehensive programme to carry out studies that would lead to the dredging of the Kpeshie Lagoon between La and Teshie would begin in the first quarter of 2007.

The programme would include environmental impact assessment to ensure a sustainable development and management of the lagoon. It would bring on board the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Fisheries Commission and other stakeholders.

Ms Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing answering questions on the floor of Parliament, said the siltation of the Kpeshie Lagoon had become very serious and complex in proportion similar to the Korle Lagoon.

The answer was in response to a question posed by Nii Amasa Namoale, NDC-Dadekotopon on when the lagoon would be dredged or desilted.

Ms Dapaah said also that the design for the replacement of the existing culvert at the T-junction end of the La central drains had been completed and cost estimates were being finalized.

She said as soon as the estimates were finalized funds would be secured for procurement of the works in order to improve the flow of storm water to reduce the extensive damage caused by flooding in the area.

To a question asked in the name of Mr Mohammed Jagri, NDC-Zabzugu/Tatale as to what plans the ministry had to solve the perennial water problem at Tatale, the Deputy Minister said the Zabzugu/Tatale Water Supply System, under a financing arrangement between the European Union and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) would be considered for rehabilitation and expansion as part of efforts to eradicate guinea worm in the Northern Region. The Community Water and Sanitation Agency would facilitate the project, which is expected to begin early 2007.

Ms Dapaah also announced that feasibility studies for the Small Town Water System for Essam, Debiso and Yawmatwa in the Bia District had been completed.

Financing agreement for the implementation phase of the project, under which 40 communities in the Small Town Water and Sanitation Project, under European Union and Government of Ghana collaboration had been concluded.

Ms Dapaah said proposals for the procurement of consultants had also been completed and civil works for the water supply schemes are expected to begin in the middle of 2007.
