Sunyani, June 20, GNA - The Sunyani Municipal Assembly has warned it would demolish all structures erected at unauthorized places in the municipality by the end of the year. Mr Kwasi Oppong-Ababio, Municipal Chief Executive disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, on Monday.

He said the exercise would allow the Assembly to construct access roads and also lay power lines for the extension of electricity to newly developed areas of the municipality.

Mr Oppong-Ababio said the exercise would affect the Sunyani Central Business District, New Dormaa, Abesim and Penkwase. He explained that because of the haphazard manner in which some traders had erected structures at unauthorized places in some parts of the municipality, the Assembly had found it very difficult to extend electricity and pipe-borne water to some new areas. The Municipal Chief Executive said the Assembly had created satellite markets at New Dormaa, Penkwase, Estate and SNNIT areas, but the traders had refused to move to the new markets, creating unnecessary congestion.

Mr Oppong-Ababio said in case of any fire outbreak it would be very difficult for personnel of the Fire Service to move in since people had blocked access roads in some areas of the municipality. He cautioned those whose structures were sited at unauthorized areas to remove them before the demolition exercise. Mr Oppong-Ababio said though the Assembly recognized the anxiety those people might go through, the exercise had become necessary to enable the Assembly to execute its development agenda to meet the demands of the people. 20 June 11
