Sunyani (B/A), Aug 24, GNA - Five buses were inaugurated in Sunyani on Tuesday, under the Mass Transport Service to help ease the transportation problem in the municipality.

Mr John Henry Mensah, Senior Minister, in presenting the keys of the buses on behalf of President Kufour stated that, the buses were to fulfil the promise made by the government in 2002 after an increase in petroleum.

He explained that the price hike in the price of the commodity led to an increase in fares, which became a problem for the public and the government decided to import the buses.

The Senior Minister said Brong-Ahafo was the fifth region to receive the buses, which were already operating in the Northern, Western, Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions, adding that, the Central Region would be the next.

Mr Mensah urged drivers and conductors who would be operating the buses to be fair in the discharge of their duties to enable the region to gain from their operations.

Mr Yaw Adjei-Duffour, Deputy Regional Minister, thanked the government for fulfilling its promise to the region and gave the assurance that they would be taken good care of to ensure that the buses served longer.

The Deputy Regional Minister advised drivers and transport unions to co-operate with the bus drivers "since they are not meant to disrupt your operations but to augment the transportation system in the region". Mr Adjei-Duffour said a management committee would be set up to employ drivers and conductors.
