Dwinyama (Ash), June 15, GNA - Mr Francis Manu Adabor, the Ashanti Regional Surveyor, has instituted a scholarship scheme for the best girl in next year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Ahafo-Ano South District.

The scheme will cover the education of the beneficiary from the senior secondary school up to the tertiary level and is designed to motivate girls in the district to take their education seriously. It is also intended to raise the poor standard of girl-child education in the district and when it proves successful it would be extended to boys.

Mr Adabor said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Dwinyama on Sunday at the first Girls' Week celebration organised by the Ahafo-Ano South District Directorate of Education. It has as its theme, "Girl Education, A Key to National Development".

He expressed concern about the poor standard of education in the district, particularly girl-child education, and said this moved him to initiate the scholarship scheme named the 'Cecilia Badu Scholarship Scheme' in memory of his mother. Mr Adabor said his mother knew the worth of education, toiled to educate him and instituted the scholarship scheme in her honour. He called on parents to make the education of their children a priority instead of pushing their girls into early marriages.
