Tema, April 15, GNA - The Tema District Council of Labour (TDCL), in conjunction with the National Security Agencies in the Metropolis, would on April 30, embark on a Health Walk, to herald this year's May Day celebration.
Mr Wilson Agana, TDCL Chairman, announced this during the Council's general meeting on Friday, to deliberate on its preparation towards the celebration of this year's May Day.
Mr Agana stated that, apart from serving as a warm up for the actual celebration, the Health Walk, would also be a platform for the workers to interact with security officials who would participate in the exercise.
He added that personnel from the Police Service, First Battalion of Infantry and other Security Agencies, would be expected to participate, as a way of bridging the gap between the security agencies and civilians.
He further said the Walk would start from the Tema Motorway Roundabout at 0600 hours and end at the Tema Sports Stadium. The Chairman said a symposium, which would be addressed by officials from the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Ghana Employers Association, and the National Labour Department, would also come off on April 28, this year.
The symposium would throw more light on the theme for the celebration, which is: 93Decent Work For Sustainable Economic Development,"
Madam Teresa Nadia Abugah, Head of Women's Desk at the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), who represented the Secretary-General of the Congress, congratulated the TDCL for its initiatives. Madam Abugah indicated that TDCL was always ahead of most of the 122 District Councils of Labour and attributed this to the Council's frequent meetings.
She noted that Tema was a strategic and key Council whose activities positively affected the other Councils. She said it was about time all the other Councils in the country initiated moves towards progress.
On the theme for the impending May Day celebration, Madam Abugah said, the pillars to be discussed under decent work included social security, social dialogues, and the rights of workers. She called on workers to fully participate in all the scheduled programmes for the celebration, since that was the only day dedicated for workers worldwide.
