TMA City Guards pass out

Tema, Dec, 14, GNA- The Tema Municipal Assembly has recruited 40 new City Guards to assist the Assembly in its operations The duties of the newly recruits guards will include accompanying revenue officers to collect revenue, assist pedestrians at Zebra crossing, check commercial drivers to ensure that they obtain TMA's stickers and licences as well as assist in the control of traffic.

Mr Ishael Ashitey, Minister of State, Trade, Industries and President's Special Initiatives was the special guest of honour for the passing-out parade, which was held at the forecourt of the Assembly. Seven of the recruits have undergone intensive training at the Police Recruits Training Depot, Accra and other stages of the training which will continue after the passing out were female.

Addressing the passing-out parade, Mr Samuel Evans Ashong Narh, Municipal Chief Executive noted that the establishment of TMA sub-offices at the Tema Manhean, Kpone, Sakumono,. Ashaiman and Adenta have over-stretched the 32 guards in the system to cope with expanded scope of duties

He emphasised that the guards, will be required to accompany the development control units of the engineer's department whenever the needs arises Mr Narh urged them to stand firm against "undue influence by members of the public who may want to use you for illegal transactions."

He, however, cautioned them that, "your duties and responsibilities do not extend to allocation of market plots, or spaces of erection of kiosks. You are not health or building inspectors." As officers of the assembly, you are required to report suspected illegal or unauthorised developments to the administration or appropriate department of the assembly for investigations and necessary action.

You must also stand firm against undue influence by members of the public who may want to use you for illegal transactions. Mr Narh said, while TMA demand discipline, hard work and punctuality for its workers they are expected to work with dedication and treat the public with respect, stressing this applies to no less than the new recruits.

Miss Abena Serwah, was named as the best all round recruit. Among those present were chiefs, service commanders and assembly members The Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy Band provided music. 15 Dec. 03
