Sunyani, Sept 19, GNA- Mr Saddik Yakubu Bukari, Brong Ahafo Regional Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), on Friday said the Union will not compromise with any decision that affects workers.

The TUC is mainly to fight for members' interests and to ensure that they work and live under better conditions that will enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development, he said.

Mr Bukari was speaking at a one-day capacity building seminar for the Women Committee of Communication Workers Union (CWU) of TUC and attended by 30 participants from the region.

The seminar has the theme, "Capacity building for women in trade union".

Mr Bukari stated: "The TUC is not against the National Health Insurance Scheme but with the two-and-a-half percent deduction from workers' contributions, since the deduction would definitely affect the SSNIT scheme and in turn affect workers in future.''

He said TUC executives will not allow themselves to be blamed in future by members when things get out of hand.

The Regional Secretary stated that most of the workers are ignorant of the health scheme, do not know what it entails and that they must be given enough education about the scheme.

He said the Union maintains its stand of organizing a national demonstration on September 24 against the deductions if government fails to negotiate with it.

Mr John Appiah Boateng, Regional Head of Ghana Telecom, said women in trade union deserve to be trained in terms of their potential in union activities.

These programmes, he added, are aimed at enhancing their knowledge, skill, attitudes and behaviour towards productivity and workers' welfare.

Mr Boateng stressed that capacity building, if properly planned, would encourage the use of basic principles in developing and providing customers' satisfaction to all workers at all times. Mr David Clottey, National Chairman of CWU, appealed to members to work together in unity to support the executives in sustaining the union.

He asked the women not to leave all the higher positions for men but should also try their best to attain such positions in society.
