In recent times, the opposition NDC has been perpetrating a myth that the Tamale Municipality in particular and the Dagbon area was their virtual stronghold and a no-go area for the NPP.
In the two years since the tragic murder of the Ya-Na, the NDC has been making political capital out of it and created the impression that the NPP was virtually dead in the Tamale municipality and that NPP actionist dare not show their faces.
The recent visit of the Veep Aliu Mahama to Tamale and the tumultuous welcome he received however cast serious doubts on the NDC invincibility and seem to indicate that the NPP was strong and well in Tamale. The NPP was not only strong and well in Tamale municipality but they were ruling supreme, and baring a miracle, the NPP would sweep all the three constituencies in the Tamale municipality in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
In community after community visited dozens of former NDC supporters revealed that they had defected to the NPP because they had realized that the NPP was more sensitive to their needs and they were full of praises for their MP, Alhaji Idriss Mustapha Ali who also doubles as the minister for Works and Housing.
At Young in the Tamale South constituency, over a 100 NDC defectors waited deep into the midnight to be introduced to the MP. And the story was the same at Fooshegu where another several dozens waited until 11pm to meet the minister. The crowning moment which actually confirmed that the NDC myth had been broken was on Sunday afternoon when the NPP ward in the Dohinaayilli suburb of Tamale held a flag hoisting ceremony to hoist the flags of the NPP.
This small and local ceremony in a small suburb virtually generated into a carnival with several thousands of Tamale residents joining in. It all started when the MP, Alhaji Iddris Mustapha Ali arrived at the venue of the flag hoisting ceremony. Thousands lined up to cheer him. It was learnt that probably the NPP would carry all the three seats and that the incumbent MP could win in any of the two constituencies.
