Tamale Rotary club assists community with household latrines

Garishegu (NR), Feb. 28, GNA - The Rotary Club of Tamale has provided some 54 household latrines for the people of Garishegu, a farming community within the Tamale Metropolis to help prevent diarrhoeal diseases in the community. The rotary clubs of Lewisburg, Beckley, Credeo Kenova and Rocky assisted the Tamale Rotary Club with some funds for the latrine project, which cost some $26,000.

Mr. Joseph Mumuni, President of Rotary Club of Tamale, who handed over the latrines to the various households on Saturday, said Rotary clubs were concerned about the general welfare of vulnerable communities, hence the need for the provision of the facilities. He said over the years the Tamale Rotary Club had been providing healthcare facilities, water, education facilities and other development projects to deprived communities in the Northern Region, as a means of alleviating the plight of the people. Mr. Mumuni said the Garishegu community was exposed to poor environmental and sanitation practices, which could cause diarrhoeal and cholera, and advised householders to ensure the proper use of the facilities, so that children and animals did not fall inside. He advised the community to continue to practice good hygiene to ensure that they did not any contract communicable disease, and gave the assurance that his outfit would continue to liaise with its donor partners for more assistance.

Alhaji Haruna Abdulai Friday, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) commended the Tamale Rotary Club and its development partners for the enormous assistance it had given to the people of the Region. He said the provision of the household latrines was in line with the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly's vision of working out to ensure good hygiene and sanitation practices. He said the Assembly was ready to partner the club to carry out its projects so that some development needs of the people would be met. Mr Seidu Yagu, Assembly Member for the Garishegu community, on behalf of the chiefs and people of the area, appealed to the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly and the Rotary Club to assist the community with a Day Nursery, to ensure that kids started school on time. 28 Feb. 10
