Tarkwa, (W/R) Sept. 14, GNA - A one point five billion cedis lorry park has been commissioned at Tarkwa with a call on drivers unions to pay more attention to the safety and comfort of the travelling public. Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Western Regional Minister, who made the call on Friday, said passengers' safety and comfort should be the top priority of the unions and drivers.

He charged the unions to check over-loading and excessive speeding and ensure that their members regularly maintain their vehicles to prevent road accidents.

Mr Aidoo advised the unions to unite and not to allow petty squabbles to divide their ranks to enable them to enforce discipline over the use of the lorry park.

He said all lorry parks in the country belong to the government who has the authority to appoint a body through the district assemblies to manage the parks.

Mr Aidoo urged the Wassa West District Assembly to effectively collect tolls at the park to enable it to construct additional facilities.

Mr Emmanuel Kwesi Ayensu, the District Chief Executive, said the lorry park was constructed under the Urban Five Project and gave the assurance that the assembly would properly maintain it. He asked the management committee of the park to adhere strictly to the culture of maintenance and ensure that users of the park do not cause wanton destruction.

Mr Ayensu said more funds were needed to construct facilities like toilets, bathrooms and urinals at the park.

The Regional Minister later inaugurated the lorry park management committee.
