Taxi drivers in the Tamale defy directives

Tamale, May 7, GNA - Taxi drivers in the Tamale metropolis have defied directives from their union and have increased fares resulting in passenger/driver scuffles.

The drivers increased their fares following last week's petroleum price increase of eight per cent.

Some of the drivers have increased their fares from 2,500 cedis to 3,000 cedis and from 2,300 cedis to 2,500 cedis.

Mr. Masahudu Salifu, the Regional Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), told the GNA in an interview that there had not been any increases from his outfit and that any driver caught would be dealt with.

He said sanctions such as fines, suspensions and dismissals were some of the actions that would be taken against offending drivers. Mr. Masahudu said drivers were supposed to operate with fares that were approved by the union in on April 03, 2007.
