Teachers advised to address gender imbalance

Nkawie (Ash), Feb. 13, GNA - A three-day technical education workshop ended at Nkawie in the Atwima district on Thursday with a call on teachers to address gender imbalance and misconceptions about girls' participation in science and technology.

Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, Atwima District Director of Education, stressed the need for teachers to encourage and promote science and technology as well as culture among the youth especially girls.

The workshop was aimed at updating the knowledge of Junior Secondary School (JSS) technical teachers in the district to enable them to cope with the effective use of technical skills in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) syllabus.

Mr Obeng-Darko said there is no myth surrounding the study of technology by girls, adding, "the rapid development of Ghana greatly depends on the full participation of women in technology since they form over half of the country's population".

Mr Baffour Asare-Bediako, an Assistant director of education, asked the teachers to design effective mechanisms that would promote gender equity in technical education. 13 Feb 04
