Teachers at Atwima-Agogo to be provided with accomodation

Agogo (Ash), Sept 1, GNA- Residents of Atwima-Agogo are constructing a 650 million-cedi four-unit teachers quarters through self-help to address accommodation problem facing teachers in the area. Mr George Atuah, chairman of the local Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), who announced this at a sod-cutting ceremony at Atwima-Agogo near Abuakwa on Tuesday, said the community would also construct a three-unit improved latrine and urinals for schools in the town.

The projects would be financed through revenue from stool lands, special education levy, harvests and voluntary contributions. Mr Atuah, who is the chairman of the projects implementation committee, commended all those who through diverse ways contributed to the project.

Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, the Atwima District Director of Education, who cut the sod, said illiteracy and ignorance are major contributory factors that lead to under-development.

He said government is committed to the effective provision of education in the country.

However, he said, the government's efforts can achieve the desire impact only if parents encouraged their children to go to school. Mr Stephen Boateng, Assemblyman for the area, commended the residents for their initiative and promised to source financial and other material assistance from the District Assembly and other organisations to support the project.

Nana Awere Bawuah, chief of the town who presided, was not happy about the apathetic attitude of some residents towards the community's development programmes.

The chief has released a large tract of land for educational purposes in addition to supporting the projects with revenue from stool lands.
