Teachers called to show professionalism in their work

Pusiga (UE), June 13, GNA - Mrs Betty Mould Iddrisu, Minister of Education at the weekend called on teachers to show professionalism in the discharge of their duties in order to be able to deliver as expected.

Mrs Iddrisu told the teachers that they were agents of change and charged them to develop a positive attitude and eschew practices such as teacher absenteeism, frequent lateness and other practices that tend to affect effective teaching and learning in schools.

She said the role of teachers in nation building was crucial and the Ministry of Education was committed to strengthening the institutional and resource base of all the 38 public colleges of education in the country to enable them to cope with the challenges associated with their transition from the second cycle to the tertiary educational level.

The Minister, who was speaking at the second graduation ceremony of the Gbewa College of Education at Pusiga near Bawku in the Upper East Region, added that the government was committed to ensuring that the College of Education bill was passed for the smooth running of the colleges.

She appealed to the chiefs and people of Bawku to allow peace to prevail so that development would come to the area saying, 93You must be ambassadors of peace and not agents of conflict".

Mrs Lucy Awuni, Upper East Deputy Regional Minister, called on the graduates to make good use of the training they had acquired so that they could contribute towards the development of the country.

She cautioned the graduates to be careful and live responsible lives because their training would be incomplete and meaningless if they ignored the moral and spiritual components of it.

Mr Luke Abugri, Principal of the college said some of the challenges facing the college included transport, accommodation and infrastructure, he then appealed to government to assist the school. He said those challenges impede teaching and learning in the college and that had brought the performance of students and teachers down.

This year the school obtained one first class upper division, 27 second class lower division, and 45 passes.
