The Municipal Chief Executive for Techiman, Hon. Alex Kyeremeh has lashed out at teachers within the Techiman Municipality and blamed them for this year’s poor performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The Municipal Chief Executive after his rounds to the various basic schools in the Municipality during the “My first day at school” visits expressed his displeasure about the performance to focus news’ Bernard Buachi.

He blamed teachers who formed various splinter groups and agitate at the least opportunity for the poor performance, and sounded a note of caution to such teachers. He says teachers who do not like the teaching profession for what it is should quit and not become troublemakers for other teachers as well as students.

According to Hon. Alex Kyeremeh, “about seventy (70) percent of the Municipal Assembly’s resources are channeled into the education sector; the least these teachers can do is to teach these kids well”.

He asked teachers to eschew holding the government to ransom at the least provocation for political reasons adding that “both NDC and NPP activists’ children have been badly affected by this poor performance”.

He says while teachers in other localities were busily teaching their kids, teachers in Techiman were busily spearheading a strike action even against the advice of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

The political head of the municipality also cautioned members of the chalk fraternity against alcoholism, truancy, laziness and other negative tendencies with the potential of bringing down the efforts of the leaders of the municipality at making the municipality a hub of knowledge.

He tasked the School Management Committees (SMCs) to be up and doing. “They should actually own the schools and not just leave things to the teachers”, he said.

He says however that he is not discouraged and believes that with effective monitoring and dedication on the part of the various stakeholders, education in Techiman would soon be among the best in the country. He also promised to continue providing infrastructure for the various schools in the municipality as he has vigorously done since taking up office.
