Techiman Municipal Road Safety Committee inaugurated

Members of the Techiman Municipal Road Safety Committee have been charged to step up proactive measures in controlling road crashes in the Brong Ahafo Region, especially on the Techiman-Kintampo highway.

Mr Agyabeng Mensah Abrampa, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager, National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), made the call when he inaugurated the Committee in Techiman, and said effective collaboration was required from the Committee, the NRSC, the police and other key stakeholders in controlling road crashes.

The Committee, chaired by Superintendent Emmanuel Twumasi-Ankrah, the Techiman Divisional Police Commander, is made up of representatives from the Municipal Assembly, Ghana National Fire Service and National Ambulance Service.

Others included Feeder Roads, Urban Roads, NRSC, City Guard, Motor Traffic and Transport Department, Ghana Education Service, and Transport Unions.

Mr Abrampa expressed concern that road crashes continued to increase, especially on the Techiman-Kintampo highway, despite intensified road safety education carried out in the Region.

He said the Commission and its key partners including the police and the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) had intensified enforcement exercises on the Sunyani-Berekum, Sunyani-Kumasi, Sunyani-Techiman, Techiman-Nkoranza, Berekum-Dormaa and Nkoranza-Ejura highways.

Mr Abrampa disclosed that from January to June this year, 135 people had died through 348 road accidents in the Region.

The accidents which involved 499 vehicles injured 506 others, he added.

Mr Abrampa noted that negligence on the part of drivers was a major contributory factor to road crashes and entreated drivers to strictly adhere to road safety regulations.
