Technical and Vocational Institutions to be self-reliant

Mr Sebastian Deh, Executive Director, Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) has challenged managements of Technical and Vocational Institutions (TVIs) to tread the path of self-reliance.

"We have the potential and the space to raise the needed resources to run our institutions and even save some surplus. We must be thinking in that direction because government subsidies will continue to shrink and even stop one day."

Mr Deh was addressing heads of selected TVIs and other stakeholders at a forum on Institutional Development Plans (IDP) in Accra.

The two-day workshop was organised by the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) and funded by the World Bank.

He urged them to see the challenges they face as opportunities that would turn their fortunes around through innovation and perseverance.

COTVET was established in 2006 by an act of Parliament to primarily formulate national policies on skills development across pre-tertiary and tertiary levels of education in both the formal and informal sectors of education.

It also coordinates, harmonizes and supervises activities of public and private technical and vocational education and training providers including apprenticeship in the informal sector.

It is an agency under the Ministry of Education governed by a 15-member board.
