Tema Lions Club raises C100m for eye care project

Tema, Nov. 2, GNA - The Tema Lions Club on Saturday raised 100 million cedis in aid of an eye care centre at the Tema General Hospital estimated to cost 900 million cedis.

Speaking at the presidential installation and fund-raising dinner dance of the Club at Tema, Madam Joyce Aryee, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines urged people in good standing to willingly offer assistance to help transform the lives of the needy in society. She said there was blessing in offering support in various forms to transform society and called on the skilled and the privileged to support others.

Madam Aryee stated that experts such as civil and structural engineers and others could place their expertise at the disposal of their communities and come out with plans or programmes to effect change in projects or negative issues in their communities.

Such assistance she said, could take various forms like supervision, spending time and energy to promote development.

Lion Isaac Gyau Dodi, out-going president said the project, which started in 1998, had reached an advanced stage would provide four consulting rooms, one screening room, an operating theatre, a treatment room, eight bed post-operating rest rooms, pharmacy, nurses room among other facilities.

He said in line with its motto "serve" the club had since its formation in 1996 provided services in various ways to the Tema community and its environs.

The club mooted the idea of constructing the centre realising problems patients go through for eye treatment as the present eye clinic shares accommodation with other departments.

Lion Josh Peprah, in-coming president said he would endeavour to complete the eye care project during his tenure of office and called for the support of the entire members to achieved the aim.

Professor Agyeman Badu Akosah, Director of Ghana Health Services chaired the function.
