Tema MESEC to re-locate EC and Magistrate Court

Tema, May 6, GNA - The Tema Metropolitan Security Council (MESEC) is considering re-locating the Tema District Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Tema District Court from the 'White House'. The 'White House,' a two-storey building which was built over 30 years ago at Tema Community Two, has not seen any renovation, thus leading to the development of serious structural cracks and the falling off of parts of the concrete roofing.

Some of the offices in the building also collect rain water whenever it rains due to leakage from the roof. The building houses the Ghana Immigration Service, National Service Secretariat, National Road Safety Commission, Tema Magistrate Court, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Business Advisory Centre.

Mr Robert Kempes Ofosuware, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive on Wednesday led members of the MESEC to tour some offices at the 'White House' to assess the situation.

Members of the ME SEC included the Police, Military, Navy, Immigration, CEPS, National Security, NADMO and other stakeholders. During the tour it was observed that offices of the EC and the Magistrate Court, which are located on the second floor of the building, were the most affected.

Some parts of the concrete roof of the general office of the EC, and the Court Room have fallen off, showing the rusted iron rods used in its construction.

Mr Ofosuware said the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) has offered three offices at its premises to house the affected agencies after the TMA appealed to the Managing Director through a letter. The MCE, however, stated that the MESEC was considering re-locating the EC to the TDC, due to the up-coming Assembly elections. He said it was also considering contacting the Tema District Council of Labour to allow the Magistrate Court to be housed at the Tema Industrial Recreational Area (TIRA) at Community Two. Mr Ofosuware stated that the other option being considered is to build a pavilion to temporary accommodate the court as it was not safe for staff to continue using the offices. 6 May 10
