Teshie-Nungua residents lament salty pipe water

Residents of Teshie-Nungua, a suburb of Accra, have made an appeal to the government to improve the quality of water pumped through their homes from the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Water Project.

They say the water flowing through their taps is too salty to consume, a departure from the potable water they expected from the plant.

The Teshie-Nungua Desalination Water Project was inaugurated this year (2015) to transform seawater into potable water for the residents of Teshie-Nungua and surrounding towns. But inhabitants say the saltiness of the water coming through their pipelines makes it useless for domestic and commercial purposes.

Speaking to Accra FM’s Kojo Essilfie Wednesday, December 16, 2015, some persons living within Teshie complained of diarrhoea after drinking the saline water, while others said they experienced itches after every shower for the same reason of high salinity. Many residents also lamented that washing with the water has become impossible due to its hardness; a situation they said was forcing them to spend more on water than was the case previously.

Residents have, therefore, called on the government, particularly the president, to come to their aid and supply them with the necessary resources, so, they provide them with more potable water.
