Teshie Orphanage appeals for SOS

Accra, Aug. 20,GNA- Mrs Janet Anyeley Parker, Founder of Teshie Orphanage, at the weekend appealed to public- spirited individuals and organisations to support the completion of an orphanage complex started nine years ago.

She said the orphanage, which had 40 inmates is facing serious accommodation problem hence the need to complete the complex on time. Mrs Parkers made the call when 28 award winners of the Head of State Award Scheme, presented provisions worth 700,000 cedis to the orphanage.

Defending the vision for the establishment of the orphanage, she said: "It is part of our civic responsibility to support orphans who through no fault of theirs cannot have education, decent homes and the joy of parental care".

Peter Nii Akai Anum, Coordinator of the Scheme said the award, which was introduced in Ghana in 1967, represents Ghana's version of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award International Association instituted in 1959. This year, 169 people were honoured with bronze; silver and gold awards for exhibiting leadership qualities in various fields of endeavour, including community development and volunteer work at a ceremony at the forecourt of the State House in Accra on Friday. Mr Enoch Nii Amon Kotey, Secretary of the Awards Scheme Committee, said the donation was to encourage and support the inmates to grow to become responsible citizens.
