Ejura is one of the major and most renowned food baskets for Asanteman
For hundreds of years, it is believed that God and other spirits purified themselves at an ancient site in the Asante Kingdom called Ejura.
Initially known as Bosommuru Adwera, the community was named after a powerful leaf used for spiritual cleansing and purification, commonly referred to as “Water Leaf” or locally as “Bokoboko.”
Interestingly, Adwera is one of the few town names mentioned in the Bible, appearing in Psalm 51:7, Leviticus 12:12, and Exodus 12:12.
A community steeped in history and culture
Ejura is renowned for its industrious and hospitable people, who uphold Asante culture and traditions. The town’s fertile land, mountains, and vast forests have made it a sacred place where God has blessed humanity to thrive, particularly in farming.
It is no wonder that Ejura is one of the major and most renowned food baskets for Asanteman and Ghana as a whole.
The origins/history of Ejura
The history of Ejura dates back to the 16th century when early settlers, led by Nana Okyere Pipim Bonsie and his sister Boahwenie, explored the land.
According to the Queen Mother of Ejura, Nana Akua Tiwaa II, their predecessors were hunters who developed the area, drawn by its abundance of game.
The presence of Adwera leaves, a powerful herb, was a significant discovery, and the area became a hub for spiritualists and herbalists seeking purification.
The significance of 'Adwera' leaves
Adwera leaves were highly valued for their spiritual cleansing properties. Dozens of spiritualists and herbalists would visit the area regularly to collect the herbs and perform rituals.
As a result, the community was named after these powerful leaves—initially called Adwera, which was later corrupted to Ejura.
