Kumasi, June 13,GNA - Three students of Wesley College in Kumasi have received cash prizes ranging from 400,000 cedis to one million cedis for their outstanding performance in a Mathematics competition. A Ghanaian student based in the United Kingdom instituted the competition to help demystify teaching and learning of Mathematics.
Mr Philip Kwasi Baffour, the student instituted the awards in Gold, Silver and Bronze after conducting a research in the college in 2004. Mr Charles Acheampong, who had gold received one million cedis cash and a certificate, Mr Emmanuel Antwi Boasiako won the silver and had 600,000 cedis cash and a certificate while Emmanuel Obeng Botchwey won the bronze and had 400,000 cedis cash and a certificate. Mr Badu Fordjour Anyan, Principal of the college, presenting awards to the students in Kumasi on Monday commended Mr Baffour for not only instituting the award but also established a Mathematics Resources Centre to promote teaching of Mathematics.
He said out of 360 students who participated in the competition dubbed "Mathematics Challenge Competition" 119 scored more than 50 per cent and 17 students in this category received a certificate each as consolation prize for performing creditably well.
Mr Anyan said the competition would be organized annually to help remove the negative perception that Mathematics was a very difficult subject.
He announced that plans were far advanced to construct a Science Resource Centre for the Blind at the College.
The Principal described recent academic performance of students in the final year examination as very encouraging and advised continuing students to learn hard to maintain or improve on the records.
