Tigo Ghana has presented its fourth school block to the management of Dimabi Nursery and Primary School in Tolon Kumbumgu of the Northern Region.
This forms part of Tigo Ghana’s new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme dubbed: “Shelter 4 Education,” where six deprived communities in the country without good educational infrastructures are given the opportunity to own one.
A statement from the company said the renovated edifice at Dimabi Nursery and Primary School includes six classrooms, a headmaster’s office, staff common room and public place of convenience.
It said the poor state of education in the community is mostly attributed to the lack of good educational facilities - a situation that has not only affected the quality of education, but also served as a disincentive for parents to send their wards to school.
“Parents in this farming community prefer to have their children assist them with farming than allow them to learn under what they describe as horrible structures,” said the headmaster Issifu Abubakari.
He said due to poor educational structures in the area most teachers assigned to the village by the Ghana Education Service are quick to turn down the offer.
The statement said this development has had a negative impact on the community and thus contributed to the migration of young school children to major urban centres in the country for greener pastures.
It said Tigo passionately believes that education holds the key to success for every nation and the Shelter 4 Education initiative in deprived communities is Tigo’s way of contributing to the lives of children who are future leaders of Ghana and the world.
Madam Gifty Bingley, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, said helping children get quality basic education is important because it is the foundation to shaping their dreams and ensuring they help build a better Ghana.
“We hope that by providing them with a conducive learning environment, they can concentrate on their studies to ensure a brighter future,” she said.
The provision of the new school block by Tigo Ghana for the people of Dimabi would enable children in the farming community to work towards their dreams.
