The Toase Sub-Traditional Council has instituted measures under, which parents who abandon and neglect their children, would be sanctioned and prosecuted, Nana Asiama Poku-Afrifa II, Toasehene, has said.

Such measures, he explained, would compel such parents to provide adequately for the educational and social needs of their children.

Nana Poku-Afrifa was speaking at the third open day of the Toase Catholic Basic School as part of the Catholic Educational Week celebration at Toase in the Atwima District.

He advised parents against spending lavishly on funerals and other social activities and to invest more in the education of their children.

Mr Dave Anane Duruye, Ashanti Regional Manager of the Catholic Education Unit, noted that in spite of public schools having better qualified teachers, students in the private sector performed better academically.

He advised parents to collaborate effectively with teachers to enable them offer quality education to their children.

Mr Thomas Takyi, Assistant Director of Education, said the District Education Office, was compiling a list of non-performing and those who indulged in social vices like alcoholism to be sanctioned.

Mr B. B. Yirenkyi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Atwima-Mponua Rural Bank, expressed concern about the inability of some parents to plan for a better future for their children and "some teachers who behave like they are in the profession because they cannot find any job to do".

He especially called for the promotion of girl-child education in the area.
