Tamale (N/R), Jun 23 GNA - The Northern Regional House of Chiefs (NRHC), has organized a two-day training and educational forum for divisional chiefs and queenmothers of the region's paramouncies on basic laws governing the chieftaincy institution in the country.
The forum will also expose the traditional rulers to the operations of the country's security and human rights institutions to ensure that they complement one another's efforts to realize their respective mandates.
The Counsel of the NRHC, and officers from the Ghana Police Service and Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) are taking the chiefs through topics such as 93Chieftaincy in the Modern State, A Tool for Development", 93Policing, A Share Responsibility".
Mr John Sullo Babinah, Registrar of NRHC, who opened the forum in Tamale on Wednesday, noted that, 93the prestigious position chiefs occupy enable you to impact on people positively or negatively" hence the need for them to appreciate the law to ensure peace and development.
Mr Babinah said: 93Traditional rulers are repository of ancient customs and traditions, some of which are inimical to the basic tenets of the constitution" saying, their understanding of human rights and governance issues, particularly those that affected the most vulnerable would enhance democratic governance in the country.
He said the forum was also in-line with the recent formalization of the enskinment of female chiefs in the three Northern Regions and therefore, the need to engage them to appreciate chieftaincy laws and the support they could give their male counterparts.
He said the forum, which was supported by Sustainable Peace Initiative (SPI), an NGO, would be replicated in the Upper West and Upper East Regions.
