Transport unions in Sekyere West accept 40% fare increase

Two transport unions in the Sekyere West District of Ashanti have fully complied with the government's 40 percent increases in transport fares.

This followed a meeting between the District Assembly, the Police Service, Co-operative Transport Union (CTU) and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at Asante-Mampong.

The union executives said they had accepted the new fares against the background that fuel prices are determined by uncontrollable external factors and that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could not be held to ransom over the fuel hikes.

The executives noted that what was needed was for the good people of Ghana to overlook the present negative impact of the fuel hikes and look forward to the positive side.

Mr Thomas Edward Atakorah, the District Chief Executive (DCE), commended the two unions for recording accident-free before, during and after the Christmas.
