Correspondence by Nana Peprah, Ashanti Region:
As the 2024 election approaches, tensions are rising with prophecies and heated exchanges on media platforms. Despite this, many Ghanaians are calling for a peaceful election outcome.
This GhanaWeb's #TrendingGH report focuses on the expectations and voting choices of people in the Ashanti Region. GhanaWeb spoke with residents in areas like Tafo, Ashhtown, Bantama, Bremang, Asawasi, Adum, and Makro.
Most respondents emphasized the importance of peace, urging candidates and supporters to avoid incitement. When asked about their voting criteria, some said they would base their choices on candidates’ past records, while others focused on campaign messages and trustworthiness.
Regarding the current government’s performance, many rated it poorly, though some praised achievements like the Free SHS policy. Supporters of the ruling party hoped for continuity, while others said they would vote based on strong policies and persuasive messages. Some respondents expressed a desire for change, citing economic hardships.
Hajia Mother from Asawasi said, “We want peace. If there were no peace in Ghana, you couldn’t have interviewed me calmly.”
Explaining her choice, she added, “Things have become very tough under this government—from port duties to market prices. This is why I may vote against them.”
A Tafo voter stated, “This is an election, not a call for violence. We must vote peacefully. I’ll vote based on how I am suffering. This government has brought hardship, so I’ll vote accordingly.”
For Abdallah Boneshaker, an auto electrician, the current government has disappointed him.
He remarked, “I look for honesty in politicians, and John Dramani Mahama stands out. When the NDC is in power, things are better. This government only brags about Free Education, leaving other projects unfinished. Dr. Bawumia said he’d ‘arrest the dollar,’ but look where we are now.”
Despite varied reasons for candidate selection, all respondents agreed on the importance of peace.
