Twenty-three farmers receive awards in Kwabre East

Kumasi, Dec 3, GNA- Twenty-three (23) farmers in the Kwabre East district were on Friday presented with awards for their immense contribution to the development of agriculture at the 26th national farmers' day celebration held at Abira.

Mr James Boateng, 40, from Abira, was adjudged the overall best district farmer and for his prize received a television set, bicycle, two pieces of wax print, a pair of wellington boots, cutlasses and certificate. The other award winners also picked prize packages including table top fridges, wellington boots, cutlasses, insecticides, spraying machines and certificates.

"Grow more food", was the theme for the celebration.

Mr Adams Iddisah, the District Chief Executive (DCE), said the government recognized the outstanding contribution farmers were making towards the national economic growth.

It would therefore endeavour to make agriculture attractive and rewarding. He appealed to financial institutions to give soft loans to farmers to enable them expand their farms to boost returns and help the nation to achieve food security.

Mr Idisah counselled the farmers to adopt improved farming techniques and work closely with the agricultural extension officers to maximize crop yield.

Mr S.K. Semakor, the District Director of Agriculture, urged farmers to form co-operatives to attract credit tor invest in their farming business. Nana Osei Bonsu Kesse, the third, the Abirahene, encouraged the youth to go into farming.
