Wa, Nov. 26, GNA - A Wa circuit court has sentenced two traders to a fine of one million cedis each for unlawfully possessing and selling fire crackers popularly known as "knock-out."
The two; Issah Adama 22 and Alhassan Bukari 25 who were arraigned before the court pleaded guilty to the charge, but the presiding Judge Alhaji M.A. Mustapha, deferred the sentence and remanded them in prison custody until November 24.
On their second appearance on Monday, November 24, a fine of one million cedis each was imposed on them or in default one-year jail each, but they chose the former and walked out after payment.
The judge also ordered the police to destroy the exhibits and warned that he would deal severely with anyone who engages in similar offences.
Prosecuting Inspector Stephen Dobara told the court that the two convicts were among a few traders who had started selling explosives to members of the public as Christmas was approaching even though they were warned on several occasions against it.
He said in order to nib the practice in the bud, the police embarked on an operation and the two traders were arrested for selling the banned explosives to the public.
In the first operation, Issah Amadu was arrested and he also led the police to arrest his supplier Alhassan Bukari, a storekeeper at the Wa Central market.
