U/W political parties don't want chiefs to get involved in politics

Wa, Feb. 10, GNA- Nine political parties in the Upper West Region have warned traditional rulers against their involvement in partisan politics as that could undermine the traditional authorities and create division among people of the area.

In a nine-point resolution signed and adopted by their representatives at a workshop, the parties also urged political leaders to avoid abusive language during their campaign programmes.

They called on the campaign teams of various parties to use civil language and avoid condemning other party leaders as it could tickle down to the rank and file of parties.

The signatories to the resolution were the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples National Convention (PNC), Egle Party, Democratic People's Party (DPP), United Ghana Movement (UGM), Convention People's Party (CPP), National Reform Party (NRP) and Great Consolidated People's Party (GCPP).

The workshop, organised by the regional directorate of the National Commission on Civic Education and sponsored by Action Aid Ghana, a non-governmental organisation, attracted over 50 participants from the region.

"We resolve and adopt that political parties should apply the rule of law in their electioneering campaigns and avoid vindictive language," the resolution stated.

The participants also urged party leaders to study the electoral laws and their various manifestoes carefully so that they did not repeat the mistakes of the past.

The participants urged opposition parties to play a watchdog role, give useful suggestions to the ruling government and not criticise anyhow.
