UENR focuses on programmes relevant to national development

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), would only roll out programmes to train and build the capacity of human resource of the country.

That would ensure the introduction of courses relevant to the various sectors of the economy, to accelerate the country's development, Professor Mrs. Esi Awuah, Vice Chancellor of the University, has said in Sunyani.

Prof. Mrs. Awuah said this when a Committee from the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) led by its President, Dr. Kwasi Agoh, inspected sports facilities and management structures of UENR, to either approve or disapprove their membership of GUSA.

She noted that the country always sought the expertise of foreigners in the development of some sectors, saying the University would therefore introduce courses to train its students to address that challenge.

Prof. Mrs. Awuah stressed the importance of sports, noting that it did not only provide a holistic approach in the training and development of an individual, but taught accountability, dedication, and leadership, and also built the individual’s self-esteem and confidence.

She announced that sports was included in the Vice-Chancellor’s courses that would soon be introduced at the University, adding that other programmes would be Architectural Engineering, Construction Technology and Cyber Crime.

Dr. Agoh explained that the inspection was a requirement to ensure that prospective applicants met the set standards to become GUSA members.

He mentioned, among others, the mandate of GUSA, as organizing Universities in Ghana sporting activities, raising teams to engage in international games, training students to be leaders in charge of sports development.

Mr. Frank Boakye-Yiadom, the Senior Sports Coach of UENR said “the science conception that science is purely academics, is hindering the interest of students in sports”.

He, however, noted that male participation in sports was excellent, but bemoaned lack of interest on the part of the females.

Mr. Boakye-Yiadom indicated that the University’s Sports Management team would soon organize sporting activities to bring on board all staff and students to educate them on the essence of Sports, to whip up their interest.
