UEW to establish college of science and mathematics education

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), would establish a College of Science and Mathematics and College of African Studies to broaden the scope of education of the university.

Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, announced this at the 2012-2013 Matriculation of a total of 3,890 students to undertake various diploma and post-diploma courses through Distance and Sandwich programmes.

He said in the attempt to remain the premier university in distance education in Ghana and stand the test of time, state-of-the-art permanent structures will soon be built at Techiman, Sogakope, Ejisu, Kukurantumi and cape Coast to enhance tuition.

These structures will help a great deal in their effort to decongest some over-populated study centres and provide means of accommodating coordinators, administrators and tutors.

Professor Asabere-Ameyaw said as part of their student service package, the learning centres at Accra College of Education, Tamale, Nkawkaw, Koforidua, Navrongo, Tarkwa, Hohoe and Wa have been connected to the internet to enhance teaching and learning.

The Accra Academy Study Centre, Atebubu, Bechem, Obuasi, Axim, Sogakope, Kumasi, Techiman, Enchi and Assin-Fosu are also being connected, he said, adding that the project is 90 percent complete.

Professor Asabere-Ameyaw urged the students to take their studies seriously and avoid cheating in examination or do the academic work of a fellow student on his or her behalf.

He said the purpose of assignments was to develop the skills of the student and measure his or her progress.

Dr Kwame Asante, Director of Institute for Educational Development and Extension, assisted the Registrar, Mr Christopher Y. Acquah-Mensah to administer the matriculation oath to the fresh students.

Mr Acquah-Mensah said the oath enjoins them to obey the rules and regulations of the university.
