UN Day marked in Tamale

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), has marked the 69th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (UN) with a clean-up exercise at Gumani in Tamale to promote healthy living.

Staff of UNICEF, and some members of the public, desilted choked gutters, cleared bushes and swept the streets at Gumani, a suburb of Tamale.

Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini, Deputy Northern Regional Minister, who addressed the participants after the clean-up exercise, emphasized the need for residents of the region to live in peace, to ensure accelerated development.

Alhaji Fuseini expressed displeasure at the cholera situation in the country, and urged all and sundry to embrace cleanliness to promote a healthy society.

Mr Alhassan Mohammed Sorugudoo, District Chief Executive for Sagnarigu commended UNICEF and other UN agencies working in northern Ghana for their invaluable support towards improving the socio-economic conditions of the people.

Mr Sorugudoo used the opportunity to launch a monthly clean-up exercise in the Sagnarigu District, as part of the nationwide clean-up exercise being promoted by the Vice President.

Mr Abebe Hankore, Chair of the UN Zonal Office in Tamale, educated the public on the Ebola disease and the cholera outbreak in the country, and urged all to ensure personal hygiene to avoid such diseases.

The UN Day, celebrated on October 24, since 1948, is set aside by the UN General Assembly to highlight, celebrate and reflect on the work of the UN, which was founded on October 24, 1945.
