UNHCR donates school at Gomoa Fetteh

The United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday handed over a Senior High School (SSS) building to the Gomoa Fetteh community in the Central Region.

The school, which was built at a cost of GH¢1.3million, has 18 classrooms, a sick bay, three computer laboratories, computer laboratory combine with a library, offices, staff common room and assembly hall.

Mr Tetteh Padi, Project Coordinator of the Ghana Refugee Board, said the Liberian refugees had stayed in the area for more than 20 years.

He said although their refugee status ended in June last year some of them applied to the Government to stay in the country, adding that the school would benefit the community and the refugees.

Mr Orana Veton, Protection Officer at the UNHCR said 30,000 Liberian refugees are in Ghana.

He said the best way to support the Gomoa community is to provide the people with a long term investment which is education.

Mr Veton said UNHCR is writing its final report on the Liberian refugee situation in Ghana which needs the co-operation of the people of Gomoa Fetteh.

Mr Isaac Kinsley Ahunu-Armah, Gomoa East District Chief Executive said the project started in January 2010 and was facilitated by the Christian Council of Ghana.

He thanked Nana Abori Yamoah II, Chief of Fetteh for giving out the land to the UNHCR to build the school.
