Over fifty residents of Boso, a suburb in the Eastern region have been trained in fresh yoghurt, liquid soap making, beads making and pancake to develop their personal skills in order to establish their own businesses.
The training was organised by Universal Light Media (UNILIME) Foundation, an NGO committed to humanitarian activities as part of their fifth annual Community Outreach programme to empower Ghanaians on how to set up their own businesses to make them financially independent.
The training programme was organised based on the theme: “Vocational Training as a tool for Youth and Rural Empowerment” with the aim to improve the quality of lives of residents.
VOCTECH Project
Most of the beneficiaries were unemployed whiles some school dropouts were ready with their notepads and pens, excited to meet such an opportunity.
Speaking on the sidelines of the training. the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the organization, Ms. Regina Okyere Darko said the organization is poised to assist rural areas and the less privileged individuals with employable skills to enable them to create their own jobs and earn a decent living.
The training is under UNILIME Foundation's flagship programme, Vocational, Technical and Technological (VOCTECH) training which was launched last two years. She said, the aim of the program is to empower the less privileged especially the youth in all the ten Regions to enable them develop their skills for them to be independent as a way to support the government's efforts to create more jobs.
“This will go a long way to help the less privileged and the country as a whole,” Ms Darko noted, adding that the training intended to improve vocational, technical and technological training as well as to promote made-in-Ghana products.
This, she noted, would promote skills development training so they could be self- reliant.
Community Development
Speaking at the event, the Chief of the Community, Nana Osabarima Agyemang Oboahyia II, commended the organization for such a laudable initiative which had engaged many residents of the community.
As a way to capitalise on the project to bring more development to the community, the Chief pledged to give the organisation a land or a structure which could be used as a centre to train more residents of the community, especially the youth.
“There is no government work here so education is the only priority. Through education, the community has been able to raise great men and women from Boso who are in key positions in the country. Therefore, l am ready to support you with anything to build a centre here for residents to be skilled so they can do their own job,” he said.
He said, Accra is choked in terms of everything, therefore if a resident realises the job he or she wants to do in Accra, and similar jobs are available in the community, the person would see no need to go to Accra.
Therefore, the Chief said he is ready to assist anytime that the organisation would want to start the project in the community.
He urged residents to take the project seriously so it could affect their lives positively.
As a way to show appreciation to the chief and the community as a whole for their readiness to accept the organization in impacting lives, the organization presented a citation to the chief and certificates to participants and elders in the community
