[11/03/2014, Accra] The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) inaugurated its local chapter of the Ghana Association of University Administrators, (GAUA).
At a brief but colourful inaugural ceremony held at the auditorium of the University in Accra, the national President of GAUA, Mr. John Gordon Mensah described the Association as an “endangered union,” because of its rather small membership size compared with other university associations. “We therefore need to depend on the active involvement, participation and unalloyed support from the rank and file of the membership in promoting the activities and programmes of the Association,” he urged the members.
“No lukewarm attitude should be entertained and no sitting on the fence is to be encouraged. It is your commitment and my commitment that will make the Association thrive in any hostile environment,” he added, before inducting the first elected executives of the Association into office under the leadership of Mr. Thomas Atuam as President.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University and Chairman for the occasion, Professor Anthony K. Ahiawodzi in a short exhortation, charged the members of the Association to promote and practice professionalism in order to make an impact in the University community.
The event was attended by the Registrar of UPSA, Dr. Seidu Mohammed Mustapha, and all members of the Association working at the University, as well as local Presidents of the Association in sister universities.
In an acceptance speech on behalf of the new executives, Mr. Atuam pledged to support the activities of the Association at the national level. He encouraged members to join him in putting their shoulders to the wheel to work together in moving the Association and the University forward.
First inaugurated in August 1980 at the University of Ghana, GAUA aims to promote the advancement of higher education in Ghana, and the professional development and welfare of its members.
It is an Association made up of senior administrative and professional staff of public universities in Ghana, including Auditors, Accountants, Directors of Finance, Registrars, Architects, Quantity Surveyors, Engineers, Pharmacists, Lawyers, Medical Doctors, among many others. With the addition of the UPSA, the association now has a total of 10 branches.
