The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has signed separate agreements to transfer funds for the first three months for the Resiliency in Northern Ghana Programme.
The USAID signed the agreement with the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), and the Saboba and Chereponi Districts.
Resiliency in Northern Ghana Programme, a $60 million USAID- supported initiative, will support Ghana food security and nutrition objectives. It seeks to improve the livelihoods and nutritional status of poor people with emphasis on women of child-bearing age and children less than five years.
More than 367,000 people in the region will benefit from the initiative, which is expected to help increase food security, encourage the consumption of diverse quality food and improve nutrition, especially among women and children.
Mr. Moses Bukari Mabengba, Northern Regional Minister, signed on behalf of the NRCC and the District Coordinating Directors of Saboba and Chereponi, Mr. Evarist Dery and Mr. Issaka Basintale, respectively signed for their districts.
Ms. Cheryl Anderson, USAID/Ghana Mission Director, signed on behalf of the United States Government at the offices of the NRCC in Tamale on Tuesday.
The agreement with the NRCC was to enable the Council to provide technical, monitoring and supervisory roles to the two districts.
Mr. Mabengba called on the beneficiary districts to effectively implement the programme to achieve its objectives to pave way for other districts to benefit from the initiative. He thanked the United States Government for her continued assistance to the country.
Ms. Anderson said the initiative would support the districts to fulfill their development plans. She said this would help low income families to improve on their health and enable them to better cope with natural disasters such as droughts or floods and fluctuating food prices.
Mr. Mabengba said the US government would continue to support Ghana and its development efforts.
