THE SAKUMONO police station will soon receive a new ultra modern district police headquarters to enhance police activities in the community.
The new station would also help to accommodate more police personnel at the station to beef-up security within and around Sakumono.
This was revealed by the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, during the celebration of the West Africa Security Services Association organized by the Tema police. Some dedicated personnel of the service were awarded for their hard work during the celebration.
Mr. Ampofo assured the Tema police that work on the building would begin in May this year, adding that it was still going through the procurement process and hoped to be completed soon.
He also said that forty two mobile phones had been purchased and would be given to the Tema Regional Police Command to be distributed to the various police stations within the community to enhance communication among the police.
In his speech, the minister said that the Tema police had been able to bring down crime to the barest minimum until recently. He noted that security was a shared responsibility and as such the society, community, government and stakeholders must all get involved in policing in the country.
He mentioned that government was adopting new ways of providing security and the necessary logistical support during and after the 2012 elections. This, he noted, would go a long way to assist the police to be fair and firm in dispatching their duties.
Mr. Ampofo also mentioned that he, together with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, would make an amount of GH?5, 000.00 available by the close of the week to be used to purchase a set of furniture for the office of the Tema Regional Command. He further added that his office had provided lighting equipment valued GHC4, 600.00 for Tema.
Commenting on the recent police killing, the minister said general security at the various banks would be reviewed to avoid such occurrences in order to protect the lives of police personnel, noting that government would continue to support the police in accommodation and infrastructure.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Tema, Kemps Ofosu Ware, who was the chairman for the occasion, said the development of the country would be incomplete without the police since they ensured peace and order. He also assured the Tema police of the assembly’s support at all times.
The Tema Regional Commander DCOP Augustine Gyening also in his speech noted that the police had in recent times been faced with road carnages and robbery. He therefore called on Ghanaians to be more interested in acts that would bring peace and security in the country. He also assured Ghanaians that the police would do its best to ensure peace and security is maintained in the country.
