Takoradi, July 21, GNA- The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has authorised the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to allot a percentage of their common fund to the unit committees and other assembly sub-structures to enable them to take off and operate efficiently.
In addition the unit committees will retain 50 per cent of all revenue collected for developments.
Mr Philip K. Nkrumah, Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Chief Executive, said this at the inauguration of unit committees in the Anaji and West Tanokrom electoral areas at the weekend.
He said cabinet has approved two more sub-metropolitan assemblies in addition to existing ones at Takoradi, Sekondi and Shama. The newly approved sub-metropolitan assemblies are Effia-Kwesiminstim and Essikado.
Mr Nkrumah said with the full operation of the unit committees, minor issues would be discussed and dealt with at the local level without necessarily going to the assemblies.
He said the delay in inaugurating the unit committees was due to the fact that many people did not show interest in the unit committee concept and so they did not offer themselves for election. Mr Nkrumah said this made the composition of the committees difficult and the issue had to be referred to the Minister of Local Government and the Attorney General for advice.
