Kumasi, March 8, GNA-Professor K.K. Adarkwa, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has suggested the need for Ghana to document the knowledge people have acquired about plants medicine for posterity.
He made the suggestion at the opening of a two-week exhibition on "Rain Forest", organised by the Bureau of Integrated Rural Development (BIRD) of the KNUST in collaboration with the Rain Forest Medical Foundation of the Netherlands in Kumasi on Tuesday.
The exhibition was on the theme: "Save Plants To Save Our Lives: A Strategy For Poverty Reduction".
Prof. Kwabena Oppong-Boachie, former Director of the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine, Mampong-Akwapim, said chiefs as opinion leaders, owed it a moral and social duty to protect the country's forests against exploitation.
Prof. Oppong-Boachie, who is also the Omanhene of Nsoatre Traditional Area, stressed the need for traditional rulers not to connive with unscrupulous timber merchants or mineral prospectors to degrade the forest.
Prof. Henk V. Wilgenburg, President of Rainforest Medical Foundation, lauded the afforestation initiative taken by Ghana to preserve its forest resource from depletion.
