University honours five retired workers

Legon, Accra, July 30, GNA - The Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anna Reynolds Barnes on Friday advised retired workers of the University of Ghana, Legon to invest their retirement benefits to guarantee their future security. She said spending end of service benefits on games of chance, marrying new wives or other social events would jeopardise their future and that of their families.

Professor Barnes was speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor during a send-off ceremony organised by the Welfare Association of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD) of the University of Ghana Legon. The retired workers were Mr. Solomon P.K. Arku, Works Superintendent, Mr. Thomas Kofi Donkor Senior Works Superintendent, Mr. Freeman Amedume Principal Works Superintendent, Mr. Anthony Mensah, Tradesman and Mr. John K. Kayika, Driver.

The five retired workers honoured have worked between ten and thirty-seven years with the University of Ghana, Legon. They were presented with gifts ranging from wireless sets to four-burner gas-cookers. The Welfare Association also presented them with certificates of honour and gifts from the various outfits of (PDMSD).

The Registrar of the University of Ghana, Mr. A.T. Konu called on the rest of the workers to show their loyalty to the University by working hard and not to dwell on things that would divide the rank and file of the workers. In attendance at the ceremony included the Director of Finance Mr. John Minlar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah of the Public Affairs Directorate, the Local Chairman of TEWU, Mr. Peter Lumor, Mr. Philip Azundow, Acting Director of (PDMSD) and the Deputy Director of Operation and Services (PDMSD) Mr. Ahene- Amanquanor.
