University of Ghana inaugurates collegiate system

The University of Ghana on Friday inaugurated its new Collegiate System of management in the running of academic units.

Under the new system, all the various academic units have been organised into only four Colleges, with each having various Schools under them.

The four Colleges are the College of Health Sciences, College of Basic and Applied Sciences, College of Humanities and the College of Education.

The various Colleges are headed by Provosts, who are expected to spearhead the objectives of each of the constituent unit, while each School would also have a Dean as usual.

Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana said this will start from the 2014/2015 academic year, explaining that, the reform aims at decentralising the administration of academic programmes of the University.

According to him, this should make University administration more efficient and more effective while giving students’ greater choice in programmes.

He stated that in keeping with its mission, Management would continue to create an enabling environment that makes the University of Ghana a centre of attraction for the delivery of cutting-edge research as well as high quality teaching and learning.

“Our values will be underpinned by integrity, commitment, respect and loyalty, to enable us to realise our vision of attaining a world class status”, he said.

Prof. Aryeetey formally presented the newly appointed Provosts of the Colleges as well as the Deans to head the various Schools to the University Council and Stakeholders present at the occasion.

The College of Health Sciences, which has Prof. Yao Tettey as its Provost, has under it; the School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the Centre for Tropical, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

The College of Basic and Applied Sciences, with Prof. S. K. Offei as its Acting Provost, has under it the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, School of Agriculture, School of Engineering Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies as well as the Institute of Applied Science and Technology.

The rest are the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement, the Biotechnology Research Centre, the Livestock and Poultry Research Centre (LIPREC) at Legon, the Soil and Irrigation Research Centre (SIREC) at Kpong and the Forest and Horticultural Crops Research Centre (FOHCREC) at Kade in the Eastern Region.

The College of Humanities with Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah as Provost, also has under it the Business School, School of Law, School of Arts, School of Languages, School of Social Sciences, School of Performing Arts, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, Institute of African Studies and the Regional Institute for Population Studies.

The rest are the Centre for Social Policy Studies, Centre for Migration Studies, Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy, Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy, Language Centre and the University of Ghana Accra City Campus.

The College of Education, which has under it the School of Information and Communication Studies, School of Education and Leadership, as well as the School of Continuing and Distance Education, has Prof. Cephas Omenyo as its Provost.

The various Provosts outlined their visions and objectives for their respective units and called for management and stakeholders support for the achievement of their set objectives.

Justice Dr. S. K. Date-Baah, Chairman of the University Council, described the event as historic and expressed the hope that the reform would help in raising the standard of the University of Ghana into a world class institution.
