Upper East Region takes stock of road projects

Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo, Upper East Regional Minister has said government’s pledge to ensure the country’s roads are motorable for the promotion of socio-economic development is on course.

Mr. Woyongo said the construction of seven bridges was ongoing in Bongo, Builsa, Bawku West and Kassena-Nankana East Districts.

The Minister said work on the periodic highway road maintenance were awarded and work progressing steadily on two culverts being constructed on the Missiga /Polmakom road with four others on Missiga/Kulungugu road and three number culverts on Navrongo –Sissile road.

The Minister also indicated that construction of a culvert and upgrading of six kilometer Chuchuliga-Sandema road was progressing.

Mr. Woyongo was giving a report on progress of developmental projects at a meeting of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Bolgatanga on Wednesday, with sponsorship from IBIS West Africa.

On the Navrongo-Sissile road, the Minister said the construction of three Culverts on Sandema-Doninga and a 400 meter drain from Navrongo to Chuchuliga were also on course.

In Bongo, a two-kilometer town road and the construction of two culverts on the Zorko- Namong road were ongoing, he said; adding that the upgrading of a 1.6 kilometer Missiga-Kulungugu road was also on course.

He said the Feeder Roads Department was working on a 469-kilometer spot improvement, constituting repairs of some broken culverts.

He said periodic maintenance on 54.7 Kilometer surface roads in Builsa, Bawku West and Talensi Nabdam Districts and labour based projects in Bolgatanga, Talensi Nabdam, Bongo, Bawku West and Builsa Districts were going on.

He was however not happy with shoddy works done under the feeder roads projects in some parts of the Region and blamed it on poor supervision by officials of the Feeder Roads Department.

He called on the engineers responsible to do strict monitoring of the projects and to ensure contractors did good work for the Region.**
